About the Signs to
Scenic View

Recently the fundraising effort began
in January 2011 was successful. Many people donated,
including the Hollywoodland Homeowners Association and the
Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association.
Signs were installed on Ledgewood/Beachwood,
Ledgewood/Belden, Ledgewood at Deronda, Ledgewood/Heather,
and on Mulholland. Cars were diverted up Ledgewood all the
way to the Scenic Viewpoint above Lake Hollywood Park.
Once installed, the congestion on
Deronda that had created the need for these signs was
significantly lessened. The safety issue was no more.
However, the increased traffic on Ledgewood caused a few
residents to become angry. They put pressure on the HHA who
had recently elected four new board members who quickly
pressured the remaining board members to vote to remove all
the signs. Included in the outrage around the new signs were
threats of lawsuits, hostile and uncivilized emails and
letters to the board members from Ledgewood residents and
even from one of the new board members.
The photos below were taken on March 6,
2011, the weekend after the signs were completely removed.
The public safety issue has returned. The Beachwood Canyon
Neighborhood Association has asked that the City Council
Office and the Hollywood United Neighborhood Council address
this issue, including putting a sign up at Ledgewood at
Deronda and a series of small signs with only an arrow
pointing traffic up Ledgewood to Mulholland and over to the
Scenic Viewpoint.
We are also concerned about the
increased traffic and illegal parking on Mulholland from
Durand to the Scenic Lookout. We are asking HUNC and the
City Council office to help us find solutions that transcend
local politics of fear and intimidation. The safety of this
canyon is (as always) our main concern. Once the signs are
re-instated, taking some of the traffic burden away from
Deronda, we will have the luxury of time to seek out
solutions to remaining negative impacts caused by tourism in
our canyon.
