Meeting Minutes

September 23, 2004

Minutes and Treasurer’s report tabled until Nov 2004 meeting

Fire Station 82 Update – Fran

The Prop F group is looking seriously at Florentine Gardens for their relocation site.

Crime Report – Bill Sollie:

Circulated Internet & ATM Crime info to the group.

He gave us a flyer regarding leaf blowers – It is illegal to use anything other than electric leaf blowers. He suggested that people give one flyer to the property owner and one to the gardener.

Sollie suggested that people report crimes no matter what. There were several new people so he shared the number to call:  877-ASK-LAPD – his cell phone number is 213-793-0703.

Officer Sollie works 4/10  four days a week, ten hours a day and the days are all different. He suggests that people use the ASK LAPD number mostly if you need attention right away.

One neighbor said that she called the police because there was an accident but the phone kept ringing. It was a non-emergency. Sollie doesn’t have inside info on the phone system.

Fran asked about the Aggravated assaults on the crime stats. Sollie says they are mostly road rage.

He has been getting lots of calls about racing motor cycles in Forest Lawn. Every Wednesday he has been going there to stop them.

Only one reported robbery. A man was at Birds, drank too much. He was 6’3” and 210 LBs and wouldn’t leave, said he had a gun. He also didn’t want to pay the bill. He ended up getting subdued by the police.

2100 Block of Beachwood, a guy tried to break into a house on Monday at noon. He was wearing a white NY Yankees hat when he did this – the resident was home.

Franklin and Taft (15th of September), the neighbor came home and people were at the house. The police came, caught the bad guys and found lots of stolen property.

Missy asked about the Milk delivery that happens every day in the middle of the night – they deliver to the school. Sollie will check it out.

A lady that lives near one of the stop signs on Beachwood says that people are not even slowing down – she asked for enforcement. West Traffic complaint unit number is 213-473-0215.

A man asked about gun fire or fire works heard last Wednesday.

A lady requested a stop sign on Hollyridge where it meets Beachwood. BCNA will request this be studied.

20% reduction in crime over all during the year for Bill Sollie’s area. If there are crimes, Sollie will share that information with the BCNA group leaders and other leaders. This grassroots neighborhood activism keeps the area safe. The bad guys come here because the money is here and the freeway is close. Money, target and easy escape.

Mail thefts on the west side. Keep a lock on your mailbox. Postal inspectors take the report when mail has been stolen.

Property lines look suspicious at 1954 Beachwood Dr. Larry will check it out. Frank says that they are allowed to open the area wide for underground parking.

Postal Problems – Ed Hayak

Postal guy accidentally placed an internal yellow notice in Ed’s mail talking about Ed – it is clearly an internal note but says that Ed complains about “every **** thing and wants his mail by 1:00 pm. Check mail for mis-delivery”

Ed has a lot of complaints that he has generated to the post office. His first complaint was in 1986. He feels that the post office isn’t educating the carriers well. They leave packages on the street instead of ringing his door bell.

Helen had a suggestion on how to handle this situation. A donation at Christmas time will get you good service – she also gives the mailman a coke every day.

Ed is worried about missing mail and feels that he didn’t get enough junk mail. He feels this is evidence that his mail is not all getting to his home.

People expressed desire to have a postal person at our next meeting to answer questions. One person suggested that we create a list of questions well in advance of the meeting.

Byrd says that by law the post office must leave a slip in your box or at your door so that you know that you have a package is waiting.

Street Closures in the area:

Larry asked about who was impacted by the Triathalon last Sunday. He got caught in it taking an hour and 45 minutes to get home.

Missy says that this Sunday is the Franklin Ave Street Fair 11am to 7pm. Traffic from Beachwood to Bronson is diverted up Cheremoya around Chula Vista to Bronson and it’s very crowded.

Gower St. Update:

Jack Fitzgerald read the City’s letter with their findings regarding the traffic on Gower between Scenic and Franklin. LADOT determined that speed humps need to be installed.

He outlined the impact that this traffic has had on he and his wife who live right on Gower just below Scenic.

He is collecting petitions for speed humps and will update us on his progress in the next meeting.
