Crime in Our Canyon

May 17, 2003

Dear Canyon Dwellers,

Yesterday afternoon, Maureen Kornfeld became a victim of a burglary while she was in her own home. She lives in the 5900 block of Graciosa. The police told her that these very young black boys and another similar gang are preying upon folks in our hillside homes and most are armed. These three boys, around 12 - 14 years old, approached Maureen asking for directions and to use her bathroom. Dissatisfied, they walked off only to return, slit her screen, enter her home and steal her purse - all this while she was in the rear portion of her home.

We are being targeted right now. This is no time to be complacent. Please be watchful, take notes of license plates of cars that idle near your home. If you have a neighborhood watch program on your block, please send this notice to them. Listen to your dogs when they bark - keep the doors locked.

There is also a rash of burglary theft from motor vehicles in our area so keep valuables out of the car - lock it and keep an eye out for people walking through the area that you haven't seen before - write the date, time and description of the person.

At some point, if there is an incident, this information will be very valuable. After a while, you can just discard it but for now, keep a log of what you see and hear and when.

Thanks for looking out for one another.

Fran, President of Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association
