Presented to Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association

WHEREAS a resident of Beachwood Canyon fell from a City curb atop one of the Beachwood historic-cultural walls and plunged down a steep hillside at Heather near Durand on August 17, 2006, and

WHEREAS the victim is paralyzed from the waist down, and

WHEREAS the area where the accident occurred is a winding curve near a “Y” intersection, and has a panoramic view of the HOLLYWOOD sign, and

WHEREAS the area where the accident occurred has no sidewalk, guardrails, fences or safety walls, and

WHEREAS there are numerous dangerous steep drop-offs throughout Beachwood Canyon, and

WHEREAS the Hollywoodland Specific Plan precludes the erection of barriers/structures atop any of Beachwood Canyon’s historic walls, and

WHEREAS there are no sidewalks, guardrails, fences or safety walls in most of Beachwood Canyon, and

WHEREAS there are growing numbers of children living in the canyon, and

WHEREAS the Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association is concerned about the safety of residents and tourists,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association join the Hollywood Homeowners Association in generating a request to Tom LaBonge, Council Member, Fourth District, as well as to appropriate departments, City of Los Angeles (1) to conduct a study to identify dangerous drop-offs and other safety issues in Beachwood Canyon and (2) to develop remedies to prevent people on foot, bicycle and driving motorized vehicles from injuring themselves and others.
